Romans 14:10 “Why do you criticize and pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you look down upon or despise your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God.
(12) And so each of us shall give an account of himself – give an answer in reference to judgment – to God.
(13) Then let us no more criticize and blame and pass judgment on one another, but rather decide and endeavor never to put a stumbling block or an obstacle or a hindrance in the way of a brother.” (The Amplified Bible)
A critical spirit is one of the most used baits of satan! He loves to point out things that “bug” you about everyone in the church, or just brothers and sisters in general. Let me use as an example the praise team at your church. The devil really likes to pick on them because he was the head praise angel and when he was kicked out of heaven and disgraced himself he not only fell from great heights, but he knows first hand the power of praise!
Let us say you are in church. They sing a song and you don’t agree with the total “theology” of that song. You find you can no longer concentrate on God and your love and adoration of Him, all you can think is about that one song! It runs over and over and over in your head! You don’t even hear anything else this has you so bothered. You leave the service and tell your friend or spouse about how you just can’t stand the music at that church. You begin to point out what you have noticed. No one else thought about it to the extent you did. They were able to stay focused on God and move on. Now suddenly they begin to notice and what was once rich in the anointing for them takes on a new light, and unfortunately, a disappointing and darker light. Now, they are pulled out of the anointing by what you said. Their focus has been flawed by a fault-finding spirit. Soon you can no longer go to that church. What has happened? A critical spirit has come into your thinking and it has spread!
It doesn’t stop at church. It isn’t long until the people around you and their faults begin to bother you. They may be 98 per cent wonderful but that 2 per cent sticks out as though there was a spotlight shining on it! Satan has you looking at everything that doesn’t suit you just right!! You begin to see all the negative things at work. They needle you terribly! The supervisor, who you once really liked, begins to bother you. The faults of your spouse, children, and other loved ones begin to get on your nerves. Every little thing becomes huge! It literally drives you away from the blessings of God and your relationship with God and others.
Do you know you can literally think yourself right out of love with your own mate? You begin to concentrate on all they don’t do, instead of what they do. You may say, “Well, they DON’T do much!” But they had to have done something you loved or you wouldn’t have fallen in love with them to begin with! I knew a woman once that did this. She was a cosmetologist and business owner where I would get my nails done. She had adored her husband. Suddenly, reality of life set in and the “honeymoon” was over. I watched her think about every single negative thing she could find about him. Then she began to vent it to those around her! It wasn’t long until they were divorced. What happened? She took her focus off of the good and placed it on the “negative”. Someone she was once head over heels in love with, she now detested the sight of them and it all started in her thought life!
The Bible does tell us to look out for certain things! It tells us a little leaven spoils the whole loaf. But, this is talking about SIN, not things that get on your nerves. Not all people are going to know what you know. Not all are going to be walking in victory. They aren’t walking in victory, not because they don’t want to, but because they don’t know HOW to! God may have sent you to that church to share and bring the blessing of the knowledge He has given you, but you were unable to be effective because your focus and what you were looking at rendered you ineffective and literally drove you away! You not only didn’t complete your assignment God gave you, you didn’t even get started with it! You played right into the devil’s hands! Fault finding is a fast developing habit and it will render you fruitless and harmless to the enemy. It is a snare! Outsmart him. Your focus is GOD and HIS WORD and keeping it progressing on the inside of you. I promise you, God will deal with others. I’m like Joyce Meyer on this…thank God He has not called me to be the “watchdog of the church”!
Why do you think God has taught you everything He has? It wasn’t to hide it under a bushel, but to spread the knowledge, love, and mercy of God to those who have no idea of it, even in certain churches! God sends us to catch the fish, let us leave the cleaning of the fish up to Him! You will be so much happier and so will all around you. God specifically orders this in the Word. There was a study done by a group of psychiatrists some time back. They took people who were prone to nervousness and began to study commonalities among them. The number one thing they found that every one of them shared was a critical, fault-finding attitude! It literally led to mental illness! When God commands us to do certain things and not do certain things, it runs far deeper than we realize. He is literally protecting us from things we have no idea of.
Have you fallen into a critical spirit, precious reader? I have before! Let us pray together and get it under the blood so we can flourish and love as we never have before. Pray with me if you feel led:
Father God, I come to you and confess I have focused on things I should not have. I ask you forgive me, in the name of Jesus! I ask you cleanse me by the blood of the lamb and have mercy and give grace to me where I have failed you. Set my thinking in line with your word! Draw me ever closer to you! I bind the mind of Christ to my mind. I think thoughts that are pleasing in your sight! I refuse to be a critic!! I ask you for wisdom and discernment when satan tries to bring a critical spirit upon me. Thank you for cleansing me, Father. Thank you that 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness!” Thank you, Father I am back in right standing with you and you use me for YOUR glory and honor. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray! AMEN (YES AND SO BE IT)!!
Praise God! Go out, dear reader and you will be effective for the cause of Christ!! Blessings in abundance to you! I will see you next time!
